Welcome to Our Beta Test!

In response to community requests, The Writer’s Center is testing a means of facilitating writing and reading groups, for TWC members (Not a member? Join here.). Using GoodReads.com, we’ve set up online groups for like-minded writers, and invite you to explore them.

Writing groups can be literary gold mines, but starting and maintaining them takes patience, flexibility and clear communication on logistics and expectations. Often, one person serves as a de facto organizer, at least in the beginning. If you want to serve as an organizer, you can note that on your group’s discussion page.

The groups will be lightly moderated, but setting up and running your group are up to you! And remember, classrooms at TWC are available to rent for $20/hour (contact Grace.Mott AT writer.org).

Give it a whirl, with just four steps:

  1. Create an account at goodreads.com
  2. Search for the group that interests you (suggestions welcome for other topics):
    • TWC Poetry
    • TWC Short Fiction (flash, short stories)
    • TWC Memoir
    • TWC Creative Nonfiction
    • TWC Novels (fiction)
    • TWC Mixed Genre
    • TWC Literary Analysis: Not Your Average Book Group
  3. Click on “Ask to Join Group”
  4. Start talking to your peers!

Here are a few questions for writers to consider (maybe start a new thread for each topic):

  • How often do you want to meet?
  • In person, online, or both?
  • Do you consider yourselves emerging or advanced writers?
  • How will you review work? Written comments, discussion, shared documents?
  • How will you determine whose work is reviewed/in what order?
  • What’s the submission page limit?

And some for reading groups:

  • How often do you want to meet?
  • In person, online, or both?
  • How will you decide what book to read?
  • How will you determine on what aspect to focus?
