Café Muse presents Collective Voices

Monday, February 4, 2019 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Word Works and The Writer’s Center present Collective Voices: poets Sistah Joy, Ladi Di, and Brenardo. Café Muse opens at 7 pm with refreshments and classical guitar by Michael Davis; readings begin at 7:30. All Café Muse programs are free to the public and handicapped accessible.

COLLECTIVE VOICES is a Washington, DC-based ensemble that has performed locally and abroad in churches, schools, galleries, and at conferences and conventions for social consciousness and empowerment. Founded in 1995, the group’s current members include Sylvia Dianne "Ladi Di" Beverly, Andre "Brenardo" Taylor, and its founder, J. Joy "Sistah Joy" Matthews Alford, current Poet Laureate of Prince George’s County, MD. Apart from performing its original poetry, Collective Voices organizes poetry workshops and arts-oriented activities. This included the annual Poetry Extravaganza honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington DC for twenty years.

Collective Voices has self-published two chapbooks, Poetry and Prose For A New Millennium (2000) and Experience, Expression, Expansion (1996), and its members have published five books of poetry individually. Their poetry has appeared in numerous anthologies, and the group and its individual members have received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2002 Poet Laureate Special Award from the DCCAH for "outstanding contributions to the art of poetry in Washington, DC."

Attending poets are invited to participate in an open mic that concludes the Café Muse program. The Word Works is a nonprofit literary organization publishing contemporary poetry in artistic editions and sponsoring programs for more than 40 years. The Writer’s Center has been hosting and providing literary programs in the D.C. area since 1976.
