(Hill Center) Writing the Modern Fairy Tale

Days: 2 Saturday
Time: 11:00 AM-4:00 PM
Dates: 3/31/2018–4/7/2018
Location: Capitol Hill
Level: All Levels
Genre(s): Fiction

Workshop Leader: Nicole E. Miller
This workshop will reintroduce you to the elements of fairy tales and folk tales familiar to us as children, but so often transformed when we become adults—from Scheherazade to The Brothers Grimm to J.M. Barrie. In class discussion will examine why we continue borrowing from this genre and elaborating upon it, tapping local legends and learned experience. Writers will be encouraged to bring their favorite fairy tales and folk traditions to class, and to delve into the lore of their ancestors, ethnicities and families for received morals and magic. Participants will also examine the techniques of writers of modern fairy tales such as Roald Dahl, Angela Carter, Neil Gaiman, Karen Russell, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Sjón. Exercises will help you begin a new fairy tale in class, during these two sessions.
