(Online) Speculative Fiction

Monday, October 16, 2017

This course will focus on the uncanny in contemporary literary fiction. The uncanny, sometimes known speculative fiction, is often set in a landscape adjacent to the real world and invokes supernatural, gothic, magical, and/or fantastical elements to engage the subconscious. Expanding on the elements of fiction—characterization, voice, conflict, POV, setting, etc.—the course will draw hone its focus on stories rooted in realities different from our own, and on genre traditions that part ways with literary realism. In addition, we’ll also be examining techniques used by writers of the uncanny—such as world building, suspension of disbelief, parallel realities, and internal logic. Through close readings, discussions, writing exercises, and optional peer exchange, participants will break apart the work to see how it’s done and will further develop their own writing skills.
