Trying to move ahead on a chapbook or a full-length collection? Experienced poet and editor Sandra Beasley will offer tips on enhancing thematic cohesion and identifying your meta-text, including insights based on her experiences as a contest judge. We will discuss philosophies of ordering—with exemplars from a few significant collections shared using the Zoom interface—so please be prepared to read a few texts on screen. There will be time for Q&A at the end.

About Sandra Beasley

Sandra Beasley is the author of four poetry collections—Made to Explode (forthcoming 2021), Count the Waves, I Was the Jukebox (winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize), and Theories of Falling—as well as a memoir, Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life. In 2018, she edited Vinegar and Char: Verse from the Southern Foodways Alliance. Honors for her work include a 2015 NEA fellowship and four D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities fellowships. She lives in Washington, D.C.

Teaching Style: The tone of Sandra's workshops is rigorous, with lots of craft talk, but conversational and nurturing. She praises clarity, humor, and risk on the page.
