NEA/Walter Reed Healing Arts Partnership
Since 2011, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) cooperative agreements with The Writer’s Center have supported writing workshops and art therapy for service members at The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) on the campus of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The NEA/Walter Reed Healing Arts Partnership is part of a landmark partnership between the NEA and the Department of Defense. The Writer's Center provides programmatic support, including providing instructors and materials.
Leading the program is Ron Capps, the founder and director of the Veterans Writing Project. He served 25 years in the Army and Army Reserve and is a combat veteran of Afghanistan. Capps has been the contributor to Time Magazine's Battlefield blog and to Foreign Policy; his literary writing has been featured in JMWW, The New York Times, The Delmarva Review, The Little Patuxent Review, Prime Number, and Riverlit, His memoir, Seriously Not All Right: Five Wars in Ten Years, is published by Schaffner Press.
