The Power of Image: Learning to Write from Playing Video Games

Sat, 3 Feb, 2018 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Ezra Pound says that “the natural object is always the adequate symbol.” Visual storytelling mediums such as movies, television shows, and video games are using the natural object to do quite a bit of storytelling in a small space. Games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Gone Home use environmental storytelling to give us pieces of characters’ lives without prose or explanation. What can we as writers learn from storytelling in video games, and how can we apply that to our writing? In this workshop, participants will look at video games, poems, and stories that use objects to tell stories, and then go into their own writing exercises in response.
