The Federal Poets

The Writer’s Center presents a reading by members of the Federal Poets. Readers include Jacqueline Jules, Judith McCombs, Don Illich, and Michael H. Levin. The reading will be followed by a reception. Free admission.

Jacqueline Jules is the author of Field Trip to the Museum, published by Finishing Line Press, and Stronger Than Cleopatra, published by ELJ Publications. Her poetry has appeared in over 100 publications including The Potomac Review,  Sunstone, Gargoyle, Minimus, Arlijo, Poetic Voices Without Borders, Soundings Review, Main Street Rag, Christian Science Monitor, Innisfree Poetry Journal, Red Booth Review, Gravel Magazine, OffCourse, Third Wednesday, Poetica, Imitation Fruit, Connecticut River Review, Pirene's Fountain, and The Poetry Friday AnthologiesShe won the Arlington Arts Moving Words Competition twice, First Place for Poetry Press Award from the Catholic Press Association,, the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award for Poetry, and was the first place winner of the Spirit First Contest in 2014. Michael H. Levin is a lawyer, solar energy developer and writer  based in Washington DC and Menemsha MA.  He has published widely in Adirondack ReviewMidStream, Wisconsin Review and other periodicals, and has received poetry awards from American Independent Writers (2003, 2008), Poetica (2012) and Writers Digest (2013), as well as numerous freelance journalism awards.  His debut collection Watered Colors (Poetica, 2014) was a best book selection of the Washington Independent Review of Books for May 2014. Judith McCombs' poems appear in Calyx, Measure; Nimrod (Neruda Award) Poetry,  Potomac Review (Poetry Prize), Prairie Schooner; on line in Innisfree Poetry Journal and Shenandoahliterary.org (Graybeal-Gowen Prize 2012) and her fifth book is The Habit of Fire: Poems Selected & New. She has held NEH and Canadian Senior Fellowships, and in 2009 won Maryland State Arts Council's highest Individual Poetry Award. She teaches at The Writer's Center, is on the Spendid Wake Committee, helps edit for Word Works, and arranges a poetry series at Kensington Row Bookshop in Kensington, MD.

Donald Illich's work has appeared in journals such as The Iowa Review, LIT, Nimrod, Passages NorthRattle, and Sixth Finch. He has been nominated four times for the Pushcart Prize and received a scholarship from the Nebraska Summer Writers Conference. He self-published a chapbook, Rocket Children, in 2012, and he currently lives in Rockville, MD.
