African American Review
Shannon Hall 119
St. Louis University
220 N. Grand Union Boulevard
St. Louis, MO 63103-2007
web.indstate.edu/artsci/AAR

African American Review publishes essays on African American literature, theater, film, art, and culture generally; interviews; poetry; fiction; bibliographies; and book reviews.

Those submitting article manuscripts should prepare them in accordance with the most recent edition of The MLA Style Manual, which encourages the use of intratextual documentation wherever possible and mandates the inclusion of a list of works cited (with full pagination) at the manuscript's end. Send three copies of submissions (2,500-5,000 words are preferred), along with a self-addressed envelope and sufficient postage to permit your manuscript's return, to the Editor, African American Review, Saint Louis University, Shannon Hall 119, 220 N. Grand Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63103-2007.

Poets should submit two copies of no more than six poems at a time, along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (sufficient postage to permit your work's return), to the Editor at the above address.

Fiction writers should also submit two copies of a story, along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (sufficient postage to permit your work's return), to the Editor at the above address. (Stories between 2,500-5,000 words are preferred.)

Inquiries regarding book review assignments should be addressed to: Professor Yoshinobu Hakutani, Book Review Editor - AAR, Kent State University, Department of English, Kent, OH 44242. You may also contact him by email: yhakutan@kent.edu.

Individuals whose works are accepted for publication must provide African American Review with a brief biographical sketch. Moreover, because the magazine is set from computer disk, accepted work should, whenever possible, be provided on floppy diskette.

The editors do not assume responsibility for loss of or damage to submitted materials. Materials published in African American Review do not necessarily represent the views of the journal's editors, staff, or financial supporters, and these parties therefore disavow any legal responsibility for the materials.

Agni Review
Boston University Writing Program
236 Bay State Road
Boston, MA 02115
agni@bu.edu

AGNI publishes poetry, short fiction, and essays. The print magazine appears twice yearly, in spring and fall. AGNI considers unsolicited submissions for publication in print or on our website from September 1 through May 31. We adhere strictly to postmark dates, and manuscripts received outside that period will be returned unread, provided that sufficient return postage is included.

The editors suggest submissions of no more than one story or essay or five poems. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) for our response, or we will be unable to reply. Poetry, fiction, and non-fiction should be submitted SEPARATELY and addressed to the Fiction, Poetry, or Non-fiction Editor. Translations and essays are welcomed. Envelopes which are too small or have insufficient postage for a manuscript’s return will only get our response, and the manuscript will be recycled.

Note that for prose we have no word limits, but generally the longer a piece is, the better it need be, in order to justify taking up so much precious space in the magazine. (Also, every submission will be considered for publication on our website, which premieres online-only work weekly.) We also do consider novel excerpts, provided that they are cohesive enough to stand alone.

Note that we CANNOT CURRENTLY ACCEPT EMAIL SUBMISSIONS. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable with notice of such, but please notify us immediately if the work we are considering has been accepted elsewhere. AGNI’s reporting time is approximately 2-4 months.

While we endeavor to deal with each submission quickly and fairly, we cannot, due to the overwhelming number of submissions we receive, accept responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts. Do not send us your only copy.

We strongly suggest/request that potential contributors unfamiliar with AGNI read a recent issue (preferably more) before submitting to ensure that your work is appropriate for the journal.

American Letters and Commentary
850 Park Avenue, Suite 5b
New York, NY 10021
www.amletters.org

American Letters & Commentary is a literary annual particularly interested in innovative and challenging writing. All submissions must include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for response. We cannot be responsible for returning items without an SASE. A brief cover letter is always welcome, but please do not send resumes, reviews of your work, or lengthy lists of previous publications.

Only previously unpublished work is considered. Simultaneous submissions are accepted providing we are notified at once should the work be accepted elsewhere. Our reading period is October 15 – March 15.

Poetry
Send 3 to 5 poems, 10 pages maximum. We prefer that poetry submissions be sent in a standard #10 envelope.

Fiction
Stories of 12 pages or less have the best chance. Most of our stories are shorter than that. Please query before sending more than 20 pages of fiction.

Non-fiction (essays)
We are interested in personal literary essay and in critical essays on writers that are slanted for the general reader (i.e., not academic prose). Please see past issues for examples.

We regret the size of our staff makes these restrictions necessary. We also regret that the publication of just one issue each year means that we must turn down many worthy pieces that come our way.

Payment is in copies. All rights are returned to the author upon publication.

The editors welcome submissions of unpublished poetry, fiction, and nonfiction (i.e., reviews, interviews, essays, and the like). We strongly recommend that unsolicited authors familiarize themselves with recent issues of Chicago Review before submitting. Submissions that demonstrate familiarity with the journal tend to make it towards the top of the pile more quickly than those that appear to be part of a carpet-bombing campaign. Many bookstores and librar ts. The poetry editors prefer 3-7 pages of poetry. Fiction and nonfiction submissions average about 20 pages.

Contributors receive three copies of the issue in which their work appears, plus a one-year subscription. Due to the increasing volume of unsolicited submissions, the average response time is three to nine months; it is especially slow during the summer. We do not accept submissions by e-mail or fax. Unsolicited electronic submissions are deleted unread. Address submissions to the appropriate genre staff: Poetry, Fiction, or Nonfiction.

The editors seek a balance between established writers and artists and promising new ones, and material of variety and vitality relevant to the intellectual and aesthetic questions of our time. We aspire to have a broad appeal; our commitment, in part regional, is not provincial.

Articles and Essays of breadth and depth are considered, as well as discussions of leading writers; of art, music, and drama; analyses of trends in literature, science, philosophy, and public affairs.

Fiction: We consider one short story per submission, usually up to 25-30 pages.

Poetry: A poetry submission may consist of up to 6 poems. There are no restrictions in terms of length, but generally our poems are less than 100 lines. Please include your name on every page.

Fiction and Poetry manuscripts should be submitted separately. No mixed submissions please.

You may mail your work to the Editorial Office, South College, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003. Please do not submit manuscripts via fax or electronic mail.

Please type fiction manuscripts double-spaced.

Please include your name and address on the first page of your manuscript.

The Massachusetts Review is a non-profit journal, and it is impossible for us to acknowledge receipt of the many manuscripts we receive unless a self-addressed stamped postcard is enclosed with your submission. No manuscript can be returned or query answered unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.

And please read a copy of MR before submitting work. We cannot offer free sample copies, but you may order the current issue for $8, back issues for only $6.

Please do not send poetry or fiction manuscripts from June 1st through October 1st. Non-fiction is read year-round.

Simultaneous submissions: Reluctantly.

Contributions: At the time of publication we will pay thirty-five cents per line for poetry ($10 minimum per poem); $50 for an essay or a work of fiction. Authors also receive two complimentary contributor's copies.

Subscriptions: $22 annually (four issues) Current issue: $8 Back issues: $6

McSweeney's
826 Valencia Street
San Francisco, CA 94110
submissions@mcsweeneys.net

Dear writers,
A great deal of the material published in McSweeney's is written by kind strangers whose work comes to us via email or in manila envelopes. Our system for reading submissions is intricate and steadily improving, but we're still a very small organization — McSweeney's has just a few editors — and some things move slowly. On the other hand, every single submission gets read. Please be patient and understanding, for we want very badly to discover and nurture new and developing writers, and are doing our best. You can help us by observing the following guidelines:

SUBJECT MATTER
Is addressed below, toward the end.

LENGTH
Is up to you.

COVER LETTER
Please keep yours brief, though we do like to hear from people who read and like the magazine. We're not concerned about writing degrees or past publications, though, so don't be daunted if you don't have an MFA or much in the way of previously published work.

TO SUBMIT VIA THE POSTAL SERVICE
Our address is 826 Valencia Street, San Francisco, California 94110. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

IF YOU ARE MAILING FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY
You might want to submit via email. This is up to you, but the postage on the return envelope can present problems. Some people, especially Canadians, have sent us some sort of international postage coupons. Our track record regarding Canadians is beyond reproach, but we do not like these coupons and do not know what to do with them. Please make things easy for us.

TO SUBMIT VIA EMAIL
Please attach your submission as a Word file. If you send a different kind of file, it might not work, and it's difficult for us to write back to you telling you to re-send the submission. If you do not attach the story, but instead paste the text in the body of your email, we won't necessarily throw it away, but it will go into a folder that does not get emptied with any sort of efficiency or logic. The subject heading of your email should include words like "submission" or "story," avoiding mention of ambiguous topics such as increased length or diminished girth. Also, try not to call your file "McSweeney's Story" or similar titles, which would easily be confused with many others. Use the title of your story — that's best. Send your submission to printsubmissions@mcsweeneys.net.

SUBMISSIONS FOR THE WEBSITE
Should be sent to a different address, following different guidelines, which are presented in a different link on this site.

FORMATTING
It's better if you don't use colors or Fun Fonts or strange formatting.

YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
Should be on your submission — not just on the cover letter. Cover letters can disappear. Please include your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address, ideally on every page.

AUTHOR BIOS
Feel free to include a brief biography of yourself.

PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED WORK
Can't be considered here.

PAYMENT
Fluctuates somewhat, but has been impressing contributors recently. Contributors are paid at the time of publication.

RESPONSE TIME
Can be anywhere between a few weeks and five months. Please be patient. We're really reading as fast as we can.

SPECIAL ISSUES AND READING PERIODS
Because our staff is so small, we aren't continually reading submissions for the quarterly. More often than not, we read in month-long bursts, when we're approaching the deadline for a new issue. And special issues sometimes create longer delays in our response time. For example, if we just closed an issue, and we know that the issue after that will be devoted to political journalism, that would mean we wouldn't be reading new fiction submissions for up to four months, as we prepared the journalism issue. Our response time, then, can vary a great deal. And given that we're a quarterly, and not a weekly or monthly, we ask that all submittors bear in mind the very slow nature of the entire enterprise.

CHECKING ON THE STATUS OF YOUR SUBMISSION
If you were kind enough to submit something, and haven't heard from us in three months, feel free to resend the piece. We can't, however, personally respond to each request for a status report. If you need to know if we are or aren't running a piece, for the purposes of your sending the piece to a better publication, assume that we aren't.

POETRY
Can be wonderful, but is not something we publish.

MEMOIR
We don't generally publish memoir sorts of pieces, though there can be exceptions.

For more than 50 years publishing poems, stories, essays and reviews that display passionate understanding, formal accomplishment and serious mischief.

We encourage you to read Shenandoah to acquaint yourself with the material we publish before submitting your work. Sample copies of our current issue are $10 each and are available from our office or at your local bookstore. Domestic subscription rates are 1 year (3 issues) / $22; 2 years / $40; 3 years / $54.

Type (in a font no smaller than 12’) your manuscript on one side of the page only. Double space prose submissions. Number pages consecutively and use margins of at least one inch. Place your name and address in an upper corner of the first page. Cover letters should be brief and business-like, containing the kind of information Shenandoah includes in contributor notes. Address the outer envelope to the Editor and write your name and address on the upper left corner of the envelope. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with your manuscript; we will not return or respond to manuscripts not accompanied by an SASE. E-mail and simultaneous submissions are not considered. If your work is under consideration elsewhere, be sure to inform us in your cover letter. And if it is accepted elsewhere, inform us by e-mail, fax or telephone immediately.

We consider previously unpublished poetry, fiction and critical prose as well as personal essays. Manuscripts are read between September 1 and May 30; manuscripts received in June, July and August will be returned unread. Our reply time is six to eight weeks. We adhere strictly to postmark dates; manuscripts received outside the period will be returned unread provided an SASE accompanies the manuscript. Otherwise, they will be recycled.

Please query Book Review Editor Sarah Kennedy (skennedy@mbc.edu) before sending reviews.

Zoetrope: All-Story considers unsolicited submissions of short stories and one-act plays no longer than 7,000 words. Excerpts from larger works, screenplays, treatments, and poetry will be returned unread.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, and first serial rights are required. Please do not submit more than one story or one-act play at a time for consideration.

Only submissions with a return address clearly marked on the outside envelope will be opened. Submissions accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) will receive a response within five months. We regret that we are unable to respond to submissions without an SASE.

On occasion, the magazine will curate a release of fiction abiding a central theme. We are currently seeking submissions for the following themed issues: science, technology, and innovation; writers over 60; and never-before-published writers. In the submission’s cover letter, please indicate if the story is appropriate for one of the aforementioned themes.

Zoetrope: All-Story does not accept submissions via email. We do, however, provide the Virtual Studio at our web-site as a way to submit online.

Send all submissions to:
